West Coast Driving Itinerary

  • Starting point: Ajaccio
  • Duration of itinerary: one day
  • Itinerary :Ajaccio – Sagone – Ota – Porto – Piana – Cargèse – Back to Ajaccio
  • Favourite :The gulf of Porto and the Calanche de Piana.

This itinerary will most likely give place to many photo breaks. Indeed, the scenery along the way is truly stunning. The road, on a mountainside, overlooks the sea!

Go first to Sagone. The turquoise water gulf has long been one of the most important dioceses of Corsica. But the littoral, victim of barbaric attacks, was far too dangerous and the bishops finally chose the village of Vico as their place of residence. That’s where you’re going next. Vico is an atypical village bordered by the mountain of La Sposata.

Then continue on to Otaand Porto. You can then admire the sublime gulfs of Porto and Girolata, and further south, the Calanche de Piana. Take the time to walk in the beautiful ochre calanches from where you will enjoy unforgettable panoramas. Then have a drink in the charming village of Piana.

Finally, take the road south towardsCargèse. Don’t miss the church. Which one? In Cargese, two churches face each other: one is Latin, the other is Greek. A show hardly imaginable, and yet very true!

Your escapade is nearly over. You will be able to reach Ajaccio, without missing a break in the heart of the Gulf of Lava.

Our 3 West Coast favorites:

The Tower of Porto by car

The tower of Porto has a square shape, which gives it a very strict look. Don’t worry, it currently houses an exhibition and its floor is accessible to take an unforgettable picture of the gulf.

The Aïtone Forest by car

Have you noticed the forest overlooking the gulf? This is the forest of Aitone. You will be able to reach it if you have your trainers on, by a small hiking trail from Evisa… or by car of course! (following the indications after Evisa)

Girolata by car

Girolata is only accessible by sea or on foot. The beginning of the trail is at the edge of the road D81. A berry that smells like maquis. Here, no road, no noise. Only the sea, nature. An obligatory step for those who want to recharge their batteries.
